Broadband in Lorraine: Increasing numbers of initiatives and projects

The Moselle department is setting up a 900-kilometre high-speed telecommunications loop which will provide services to 250 municipalities. Internet Débit Moselle, the SEM which is managing the project, has announced that from September 2004 the department will be connected to fibre optic networks supporting speeds going from 155 megabit/second right up to 40 gigabit/second.
Meurthe et Moselle
In Greater Nancy, access to the RMT (Réseau Métropolitain de Télécommunications - Metropolitan Telecommunications Network) is a major asset to development. This infrastructure, which has 8,000 kilometres of optical fibres combined with x-DSL, local loop and unbundling technologies, gives business in the area very high speed access (2.5 gigabit, i.e. 44,000 faster than a modem).
Meuse and Vosges
On a cross-border level, Luxembourg, Metz, Sarrebrück and Trèves have joined forces to found a high-speed network known as "Quattronet". Based on existing infrastructures, it facilitates the transfer of information between businesses based in this cross-border area.
There are also increasing numbers of initiatives in the Meuse and Vosges regions. The two departments' main strategic axes are covered by broadband. Since September 2003, the Conseil Général de la Meuse has launched an inventory aimed at underpinning or influencing ADSL deployment projections, finding out what broadband needs there are and offering alternative solutions. This initiative has now led to ADSL in the Meuse region and the "Département innovant" (innovative Department) charter, along with the department's first satellite installations.
