A dense rail network
There are 1,860 km of railway tracks running all the way across Lorraine. The region has frequent direct rail links to all major European cities. In 2007, the speed and frequency of these connections will be increased still further by the new generation Train à Grande Vitesse (TGV – High Speed Train), which is now even more modern and even faster. Metz and Nancy will then be just a 90-minute journey away from Paris and only 135 minutes from Frankfurt. On a local level, the Métrolor, a regional express train, runs an hourly service from Nancy to Luxembourg via Metz.Lorraine accounts for over 20% of SNCF (the French national rail company) freight and has the largest wagon marshalling yard in France at Woippy, connected to the main French and European marshalling yards. And this is not all: the only French exchange centre for containers and swap bodies for the whole of Europe is based at the marshalling yard in Metz-Sablon.Finally, the Nancy-Nord Multimodal Logistics Platform, located near this marshalling yard, serves the whole of the Lorraine region as well as the three bordering countries.Map showing the rail network in the Lorraine region (52 kb)
